Some random thoughts:
1. Prior training is highly recommended - Rob Mercer is the man for me and he provided me with confidence, increased skills and invaluable advice. After the trip I realise that I still have much to learn though so i will be booking in with Rob again.
2. Many small dry bags fit more effectively into a kayak than a few big ones. 8 and 12 litres was a good size for me as well as some smaller ones for the day hatch.
3. One big dry bag is handy to transport the smaller dry ba…

Hi all,
The car is packed and we head to Byron Bay in the morning for a Tuesday morning start. If you want to follow our progress keep an eye on the Manning Klan's site or search Facebook for Paddle For Peace and you should see the event.
Remember it is a fundraiser for people who have been the victims of violent crime and you can donate at
www.vocal.org.au.
All the best
Simon
P.S. If anyone wants to catch up for a paddle with us as we head to Newcastle feel…

After another session with Rob Mercer the other week I am finally starting to get a more consistent roll and nailed 9 out of 9 the other day at the end of my paddle. Pretty stoked with that. Now to try it out in the surf and continue refining it!

Hi guys Sarah and I move into a nice kayak friendly house at Harrington next week. So if anyone (or at least people we approve of) needs a place to crash for a night or two, with good access to the water let me know. People with a liking for lipstick coloured kayaks especially welcome ;).

Hi guys and gals,
Another spot worth checking out just north of Myall Lakes is Seal Rocks. Sarah and I visited friends on the weekend who had rented a 3 bedroom house for $500 a week. There is a caravan park just across from the water as well. It is well worth the paddle. I had a chance to go for a brief paddle out to the bommie about 3-4k's out with my mate in his sit on top. It was a slightly harder paddle for him and luckily the conditions were pretty mickey mouse. He got a bit sea sick brie…

Hello fellow Klanners from your northern brother. Just wanted to keep this in people's minds in case they can assist or have further ideas. It has been suggested that I run some community forums on issues related to violence in our community which I am considering.
So far I have a few notable sponsors and more to come hopefully. Skee Kayak Centre have expressed interest today which is great and teh others are listed on the Manning Kayak Klan site. Check out…

When I move to Taree it is likely my Sea Leopard will be stored outside for a period of time so I wanted to have a cover for it. So after reading some ideas on Tim's sea kayak forum I ventured to Spotlight today and picked up a tube of material which fits neatly over the length of the kayak like a big sock, yes that says sock ;). It looks similar to the cover being advertised on the EK online store but for about half the price, and obviouosly without the trimmings.
One tip if you go down this p…

Hi Klanspeople,
With my move to the Manning Valley imminent and at Brad's recommendation I have created a sister site for the Hunter Kayak Klan, the
Manning Kayak Klan.
Hopefully we will be able to organise some combined paddles in the not too distant future.
Cheers
Simon

Hi all,
I have been offered a new job, well a couple of part-time positions actually, in the Taree/Port Macquarie area and so Sarah and I will be moving in 6 weeks or so.
Hopefully I can catch up for a paddle, and perhaps a beverage, with people prior to this. Although I expect the weekends may be fairly busy from now on.
I expect to be coming back to Newcastle to see Sarah's family on a regular basis so I will be bringing the yak down with me. Of course if ever people want to come exploring up…

Dobbo and I punched out a solid paddle this morning. I arrived just before 7am to see Dobbo ready and eager. After a few pleasantries we hit the glassy water at Eleebana with no plan in mind except to head south. We spotted an island in the distance and sudden…

Anyone interested in paddling this part of the Hunter River? I think it is about 65km. It is a fair paddle. I have been planning to do it for some time. It will be an all day paddle and will probably hurt. Set off early and arrive late.
A date is yet to be finalised but hopefully within the next month or so.
Cheers
Simon
