I will also be in Newcastle Sunday but I am not sure I can get a leave pass. If I can make it I will give you a call Owen and see if I can borrow a kayak again. Chances are slim at this stage though.

John and Owen. Thanks for the offers of a kayak. Mmm - Mirage, Avocet or Gecko? The Avocet certainly appeals as I have considered getting one to accompany the Leopard.

I will see what I can do. I am flying to Sydney for work on the Friday and intended to be in Newcastle that weekend. I may have to borrow a kayak though - anyone willing to lend me one for the day?

Lesson's learnt for multi-day trips down the coast

Some random thoughts:

1. Prior training is highly recommended - Rob Mercer is the man for me and he provided me with confidence, increased skills and invaluable advice. After the trip I realise that I still have much to learn though so i will be booking in with Rob again.

2. Many small dry bags fit more effectively into a kayak than a few big ones. 8 and 12 litres was a good size for me as well as some smaller ones for the day hatch.

3. One big dry bag is handy to transport the smaller dry ba… Continue

Byron Bay to Newcastle

Hi all,
The car is packed and we head to Byron Bay in the morning for a Tuesday morning start. If you want to follow our progress keep an eye on the Manning Klan's site or search Facebook for Paddle For Peace and you should see the event.
Remember it is a fundraiser for people who have been the victims of violent crime and you can donate at www.vocal.org.au.
All the best
Simon
P.S. If anyone wants to catch up for a paddle with us as we head to Newcastle feel… Continue

My roll is finally starting to come together

After another session with Rob Mercer the other week I am finally starting to get a more consistent roll and nailed 9 out of 9 the other day at the end of my paddle. Pretty stoked with that. Now to try it out in the surf and continue refining it!

Kayak vacation spot

Hi guys Sarah and I move into a nice kayak friendly house at Harrington next week. So if anyone (or at least people we approve of) needs a place to crash for a night or two, with good access to the water let me know. People with a liking for lipstick coloured kayaks especially welcome ;).

Hi Simon,

I've just realised that I briefly met you during the HCC. I was paddling with Sean Smith (aka Fat Paddler) he was one of only a couple of guys using a greenland paddler during the event. It was really early on (I reckon a few km's past CP1) and you mentioned the big paddle you were doing soon afterwards for the victims of crime (I think??). Guess the paddling fraternity is a small world?

G'day Simon,

Elliott's - they're the ones made in Clarence Town aren't they? A bloke from work was telling me about them (he lives close to where they're made). Can't say I know any paddlers in town. I'm fairly new to Singleton (and the Hunter valley for that matter), having just spent the last 14 years in the NT and WA. Have only had my boat for a little over a year. Almost all paddling has been restricted to Lake St Clair (near Singleton) and the Wyong River (clsoe to my parents place). Went in the HCC this year, but that's about it. Looking forward to meeting all the keen paddlers in this klan. Hope to develop some good friendships and learn how to paddle properly!
