Thanks Owen. Yes, there's definitely a place for having a smaller more nimble boat in the shed and the Avocet certainly fits the bill although there are a few others now in the same general vein. The Rockpool Isel for one and I think SKUK are brin...

Fond as I am of the Gecko, I'd take the offer of the Avocet too, Simon :) Owen, would it be OK if Julie took it for a spin sometime during the day too ? I really think it would be an eye opener for her.

Calendar's clear Owen, we're in. Simon, you're very welcome to borrow a Gecko, although a more drastic change from the sea leopard I can't imagine. It'll feel like a coracle after your boat. :)

Congratulations to you both Ben and welcome back. Looks like you had a fantastic day, which I'm sure will be the first of many. So are we going to see Bec in the 730 any time soon ?

Hi Owen, sounds great, it's a pretty hectic time of year for us, but I think we're clear that day. I'll double check with Jules and let you know.

One man's surf ski is another man's barge.

It was a beautiful day on Sunday so Ebony and I went down to Lake Munmorah so she could try out my new boat. Ebony is very much a novice paddler, but she has pretty good balance. As she hasn't been for a paddle in a year or so we started off with her in Julie's Gecko and then we swapped after an hour or so.

Of swings, roundabouts and stability in kayaks.

I was out paddling with Phil at Swansea channel and we got to talking about stability and particularly why would you choose a kayak with low stability. It's a very good question and I thought I ought to answer it more fully here, from my rather limited understanding. If someone with a better understanding of the subject would care to comment, that would be most welcome.

Lets start off with the thesis that we want to use edging and leaning to assist in boat control and that these are good things… Continue

Roley Poley Polly Boats that Rock

Well the fun's over for another year. Rock 'n' Roll has been and gone and didn't we all have fun. It was a great weekend. Good people, good atmosphere and great fun. I've managed to meet some more of my fellow clubbies and put faces to names on forums from all over the country. Aside from the fun this year, I had a secondary mission. I wanted to get in a couple of good paddles in the Valley Aquanaut RM LV and the Valley Nordkapp RM. Thanks to Rob, Sharon and Mark of Expedition Kayaks that missio… Continue

Southern Lake Macquarie

Simon, Sarah and I had a beautiful relaxing short cruise this morning. We launched from the reserve at Bonnells Bay just south of Dora Creek. Then we cruised down to the south around Balcolyn and Sunshine just enjoying the day and the simple pleasure of being out on the water. A little bit of paddling, a little bit of rolling, some gourmet snacks and some great company.

The southern half of the lake is much less developed and it's often a bit more sheltered if there's a northerly wind. There's… Continue

Auckland to Rangitoto Island

Only managed one short paddle on my holiday, for a variety of reasons. I couldn't leave Auckland without getting a taste of salt water spray and a brief feel of the wind in what's left of my hair. So I went out to Rangitoto Island for a sunset paddle with the guys from Fergs Kayaks. It's a pretty busy patch of water, and not being that familiar with it, I felt a guided trip would be a good way to go, especially as I dragged my brother along, who's paddling resumé consists of two hours at Port St… Continue

G'day John,

yep, I'll be watching out for any opportunities for training. I think I need to un-learn all my bad habits before I can survive anything rougher than the algae-filled lake St Clair near Singleton :-). Thanks for the welcome!

John, I really enjoy your article on sea kayak stability.
While sometimes numbers just bore people to tears your interpretation puts them into perspective and explains how to read those numbers.
Excellent article that I linked on one of my posts (as PS on http://gnarlydognews.blogspot.com/2009/09/nordkapp-lv-stability.html)
Thanx for your comment.

Thanks John, I started using greenland paddles because they load my shoulders up less than a conventional paddle. They are particularly good in a wind as gusts from any direction dont effect them very much. My paddles are made from a recycled red cedar gate found at the local tip using plans found on the internet.
