Description:
Half day coastal trip from Swansea Channel south around Swansea
head with a landing at Spoon Rocks followed by play in the sea
caves and cut-aways to the south before Catherine Hill bay.
Distance:
14.7km return with single stop at Spoon Rocks 15.5km if going
around Moon Island. 16.5km if stopping at little beach to south of
sea cave.
Conditions:
Variable swell and possible choppy seas depending on weather.
Strong rebound at Swansea Heads and Caves Beach cliffs. Treacherous
conditions on Moon Island reef forming a bombora at high tides.
This is an easy run when weather is good but can turn quickly into
a trap if wind changes abruptly. Swansea bar is notorious for
volatility so extra care should be taken. Best line through bar is
closest to Swansea Heads.
Expect to see:
Plentiful dolphins and occasional shark. Lots of fishing boats and
recreational craft. In summer, surf skis are frequent.
