Kayakers of the Hunter Valley & Lake Macquarie

First up my apologies to Brad. We were going for a paddle this morning but were a little too dis-organised to make the offer to join us. You would have had a ball.

This is just a short paddle across the bay from Winda Woppa to Little piggy beach. (sounds attractive doesn't it). Its about 3 kilometers each way on the direct path but we generally wander around a bit cutting up behind Boondabella island up to fame cove and back to Piggy if the tides are right or going up the centre of the bay if the tides are the other way around.

Today the tide was a runnout with low being about 1300 hrs or so. The wind was forecast for 10-15 knots NE increasing to 15- 20 knots this afternoon.

We pushed off from Wanda with the wind steady in the NE at about 10 knots and the tide running freely. About half way across the wind was beginning to freshen and the waves started to rise. There is a tide current line which runs from the North of Boondabah to Corellete point. Across this area the action of wind and tide started to bring up a rollicking good sea. Confused, breaking and coming from slightly different directions all at once. It was common to take a dig with the paddle and have nothing and then have a wave wash up to your shoulder on the same side. This made for a wet and wild ride across. We decided to land and have a brew and we stood and drank our plungered coffee the wind continued to build so we cut our stay short and headed back with an even more confused sea between us and the take out. All in all a very enjoyable paddle.
Once again sorry Brad.

Thanks Bill. Got a short paddle in with Owen and Anne. Or should I say, got a long morning tea in!
My big weekend was scotched by bloody stocktake at work otherwise I would have organized a klan outing up your way. I'm looking forward to getting some experience in your backyard.

Sounds idyllic Bill, and how did your beautiful new boats go ?

How so many differences can be manufactured into craft which are basically of similar dimensions is amazing. The cetus primary stability is exceptional and although we have experimented edging the kayaks and can now look very cool turning with the cockpit coaming under water we are still to find the limits when in choppy rough conditions paddling. As our familiarity with the new boats grow we will no doubt develop a much closer relationship with the boats and lift our skill set as well to match their performance.
I found the fitting of a rudder to a conservative traditional skeg boat a great feature. So we have the best of both worlds.

That's fabulous Bill,

we're starting to get a wide variety of different boats in the Klan and variety is the spice of life. I missed paddling the Rockpool GT down at Umina, but it was very well received and from what I can gather they're a similar style of boat to yours. So I'm not surprised that you're enjoying them.
