Hey Bill. Check out the PaddleNSW site. They are trying to get a group discount on insurance and I think need 200 boats to do this. I know I have 3 boats to insure and Owen will have about twenty by the end of next year ;).
Whilst the dilemma to insure or not, remains a personal "risk management" choice, I endorse Simon's comment of the proposed Paddle NSW scheme. They are trying to get a good value for money system running, to return the best possible service for paddlers and certainly worth checking out.
However Simon's "20 boats" is very, very much an exaggeration, (and would be over Annie's dead body) a qajaq (traditional Innuit type skin on frame kayak) remains on the wanted list. I may 1st have to start flogging some existing ones off as I am fast running out of storage room.
probably depends on what you feel is the level of risk in what you're doing. Personally, the cost of replacing my boat is of less concern to me than the public liability issues. Lose my boat and I'm up for a couple of thousand. Spear a swimmer in the surf and I could get sued for millions. Depending on where you paddle and what you like to do there, it could be well worth having some cover.
If you don't mind my asking, who did you insure your other boats with and how much did it cost ?

Not sure about the white water clause. Would need to read the small print where there may be a definition. A lot of boats come to grief in conditions that might be considered white water that are a long way from the beach.
And if the boat itself isn't covered in the surf, are you still covered for liability if you collide with someone while surfing ?
I don't believe that a survey report would be required for small boats.
I don't want insurance as I think I can fix my own boats. The surf thing is probably not a worry. I don't know of any surfers who get third party and I hope they don't. I worry about the nanny state as it is. I don't bother racing sailing dinghies as it costs me $400 to get insurance so the organisers aren't afraid of being sued - gives me the right royal willies.
I have insured the M580 with NRMA - I think something like $150 for $3,500 value - but more importantly $10M liability cover (eg maim someone (else!) coming in thru surf). I have no insurance on the plastic Australis Salamander - since it is wet so infrequently.
Happy to look at alternatives since renewal in about a month.
